GEM CARE Study on Oral Health in Care Homes

The GEM-CARE pilot study aims to explore simple, practical ways to support residents’ gum health using accessible technology such as smartphones. This important work could help shape future tools and training to improve oral health care in residential settings.

What’s Involved

For staff members:

  • A short, in-person oral health training session delivered by a qualified dental nurse.
  • Hands-on practice identifying gum issues and capturing intraoral images securely using a smartphone.
  • Completion of short before-and-after questionnaires to assess learning and confidence.
  • Staff participants will each receive a £20 shopping voucher as a thank-you.

For residents:

  • With consent, researchers will take a few anonymised digital photos of teeth and gums (no facial images).
  • Participants will receive a toothbrush and toothpaste as a thank-you gift.
  • All data will be stored securely and used only for research purposes.
  • By taking part, your care home will contribute to developing future AI-supported tools that could make oral health assessment easier and more accessible for older adults.
