Downham Lodge is a well-established small family run care home situated in the midst of Southsea. It is a registered care home regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).  It is registered with Hampshire County Council as a Residential Care Home. The home is also a member of the Registered Care Homes Association.

The home accommodates service users with:

  • Dementia (DE)
  • Mental disorder, excluding learning disability or dementia (MD)
  • Old age, not falling within any other category (OP)

Downham Lodge is registered for 12 people. It is a happy relaxed home with experienced care staff. It is situated in a quiet residential area yet close to the shops and other amenities. The seafront is within walking distance.

There is a call-bell system in all bedrooms, toilets, bathrooms and communal rooms, and chair-lifts to all floors. The home is well-furnished; all rooms are light and airy with en-suite facilities.

To ensure the residents interests are protected, a contract is issued which covers the terms and conditions of residency. Every effort is made to ensure the residents are comfortable and well cared for, both physically and mentally. They are also encouraged, whenever possible, to pursue their interests.

Downham Lodge is friendly, pleasant and has a homely atmosphere. It has a good reputation with clients and their relatives, friends, other agencies and professionals.

The mission for Downham lodge is to provide a service that would be competitive and offer one of the best choices for both permanent and respite care. The home endeavours to provide training, education and professional development to all staff.

The care plans for service users are tailored according to each individual needs.

Aims and Objectives

At Downham Lodge we aim to provide a caring and supportive environment for the frail and elderly residents.

The home will endeavour to provide a warm, comfortable and safe environment in pleasant surroundings. This will be enhanced by full support from local doctors, social workers, community/district nurses and support specialists e.g. physiotherapist, occupational therapist, etc.

The residents will be cared for in such a way as to retain their maximum level of dignity and independence.

The home will be well-maintained and furnished to provide a bright, cheerful and comfortable atmosphere.

Rules will be kept to a minimum and the residents will have the freedom to lead their lives the way they choose to.

The residents will be encouraged to:

  • Take pride in their appearance and maintain a high quality of life
  • Personalise their own room and have their own privacy and independence
  • Choose and make suggestions for improving the service they receive
  • Access the available facilities
  • Express their rights and their views on the care they are receiving

Additional information

Narain and Mala Lingaloo are the providers. Mala is the Registered Manager.

Narain and Mala have a wealth of specialist experience in the care of older people. Both have worked in the hospital and community care settings. They are both Registered nurses.

Mala is qualified to Masters level, achieving an MSc in Gerontological Practice in 2008.
